This pumpkin is crocheted flat as a ribbed rectangle, then seamed and gathered into a plump shape. It is a forgiving project that works well with leftover autumn-coloured yarn.
Materials
Worsted or aran yarn in pumpkin orange, a little brown and green yarn, 5 mm hook, stuffing, yarn needle and scissors.
Abbreviations
ch = chain; sc = single crochet; BLO = back loop only; sl st = slip stitch.
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1. Foundation: Ch 26. Row 1: sc in second chain from hook and across (25). Ch 1, turn.
Step 2. Rows 2–24: sc in BLO across (25). Ch 1, turn. The ribbing creates the pumpkin ridges. Adjust the number of rows for a taller or shorter pumpkin.
Step 3. Join the short edges with sl st or mattress stitch to form a tube. Thread a long yarn tail through one open edge, pull tight and secure. Turn right side out.
Step 4. Stuff the tube lightly. Thread yarn through the remaining open edge, gather and close. Wrap yarn from top to bottom several times, pulling gently to create pumpkin segments.
Step 5. Stem: With brown yarn, work 6 sc in MR and 3 rounds of sc. Stuff lightly and sew to the top. Add a small green leaf if desired.
Finishing
Adjust the stuffing until the pumpkin is rounded but not stretched. Secure the stem and weave in all loose ends.
Helpful tip
Use a long strand to create the segments. Pull evenly so the pumpkin has balanced ridges rather than one deep crease.
