Hand holding a handmade crochet flower bouquet

This rose is made as a long strip with petal clusters along one edge. When the strip is rolled, the clusters form layered petals. The flower can be made in any colour and looks lovely with a crocheted leaf.

Materials

Small amount of DK cotton yarn, 3 mm hook, yarn needle, scissors and optional green yarn for leaves.

Abbreviations

ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; sl st = slip stitch.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1. Foundation: Ch 31. Row 1: sc in second chain from hook and across (30). Ch 1, turn.

Step 2. Row 2: *sl st in next stitch, work 5 dc in next stitch, sl st in next stitch, sc in next stitch.* Repeat along the row to create a scalloped petal edge. Adjust the final repeat to use the remaining stitches neatly.

Step 3. Fasten off, leaving a long sewing tail. Starting at the narrow end, roll the strip loosely so the scallops sit outward and overlap like rose petals.

Step 4. Use the yarn needle to stitch through the base several times, securing each layer. Add a small green leaf or stem if desired.

Finishing

Fluff the petals and adjust the roll until the rose looks balanced. Sew onto a clip, bag or bouquet stem.

Helpful tip

Roll the strip loosely for an open garden rose, or tightly for a compact rosebud.
