This mini octopus is worked from the top of the head down, then finished with eight curled tentacles. It is a small desk companion or keychain decoration. For babies and toddlers, embroider the eyes and avoid detachable parts.
Materials
Small amount of DK cotton or acrylic yarn, 2.5 mm hook, stuffing, stitch marker, yarn needle and scissors.
Abbreviations
MR = magic ring; sc = single crochet; inc = increase; dec = decrease; ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch.
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1. Head R1: 6 sc in MR (6). R2 inc around (12). R3 [sc, inc] around (18). R4 [2 sc, inc] around (24). R5–8 sc around (24).
Step 2. R9 [2 sc, dec] around (18). R10 [sc, dec] around (12). Add stuffing. R11 dec around (6). Fasten off and close the opening.
Step 3. Tentacles: Join yarn at the lower edge. *Ch 9. Starting in second chain from hook, work 2 sc in each chain back towards the body. Sl st into the next body stitch.* Repeat 8 times evenly around.
Step 4. Embroider two eyes and a small smile on the front. Adjust each tentacle so the curls spread evenly.
Finishing
Shape the tentacles with your fingers and check that all eight are attached firmly. Weave in the tail on the underside.
Helpful tip
If the tentacles curl too tightly, use 1 sc in each chain instead of 2 sc in each chain.
