Handmade crochet yarn texture for home decor

This decorative cover is crocheted as a small basket with a flat base and straight sides. Three straps are added at the rim and joined into a hanging loop. Use it for a lightweight plastic pot; never hang a heavy ceramic planter from crochet alone.

Materials

Cotton cord or sturdy cotton yarn, 5 mm hook, stitch marker, yarn needle and scissors. Optional lightweight plastic pot.

Abbreviations

MR = magic ring; sc = single crochet; inc = 2 sc in one stitch; sl st = slip stitch; ch = chain; BLO = back loop only.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1. Base R1: 8 sc in MR (8). R2 inc around (16). R3 [sc, inc] around (24). R4 [2 sc, inc] around (32). Continue increasing by 8 stitches per round until the base is slightly wider than the pot bottom.

Step 2. Sides: Work one round of sc in BLO. Then work 5–7 rounds of sc without increases, checking the pot fits snugly but can still be removed.

Step 3. Straps: Mark three points evenly around the rim. At each point, attach yarn, ch 28–35 depending on the desired drop, and sl st back into the same point to form a loop. Repeat at the other two points.

Step 4. Bring the three strap loops together above the basket and tie or crochet them into one hanging ring. Reinforce each join with several stitches.

Finishing

Test the empty cover first, then place only a lightweight plastic pot inside. Keep the planter away from areas where a fall could cause injury.

Helpful tip

Crochet is not a load-rated hanging system. Use a separate secure wall or ceiling hook and keep the planter light.
