These coasters are worked in joined rounds, increasing evenly to create a flat circle. Cotton yarn gives the finished piece a practical surface for everyday mugs.
Materials
Cotton DK yarn, 3.5 mm hook, yarn needle and scissors.
Abbreviations
MR = magic ring; ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; inc = 2 stitches in one stitch.
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1. R1: 8 sc in MR. Join with sl st (8). R2: ch 1, inc in each stitch around (16). Join.
Step 2. R3: ch 1, [sc, inc] around (24). Join. R4: ch 1, [2 sc, inc] around (32). Join.
Step 3. R5: ch 1, sc in each stitch around. For a scalloped edge, repeat [sl st, skip 1 stitch, 5 dc in next stitch, skip 1 stitch] around, adjusting the final repeat to fit.
Step 4. Fasten off and weave in the tail. Make 4–6 coasters in matching or complementary colours.
Finishing
Block the coasters flat and let them dry completely. Stack them with a simple yarn tie for a thoughtful handmade gift.
Helpful tip
If the circle begins to cup, add a few extra increases. If it ripples, remove an increase or use a smaller hook.
