Hand holding a handmade crochet flower bouquet

This daisy is worked from the centre out, with five rounded petals formed around a small ring. Make several in different colours to create a bouquet, garland or appliqué. The flower is approximately 6–7 cm across in DK yarn.

Materials

  • Small amounts of yellow and white DK cotton
  • 3 mm hook
  • yarn needle and scissors. Optional: a brooch pin
  • hair clip or floral wire for display.

Abbreviations

ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; st = stitch.

Pattern instructions

Step 1. Centre: With yellow, make a magic ring. Ch 1 and work 10 sc into the ring. Join with sl st to the first sc. Pull the ring closed firmly.

Step 2. Petal round: Join white yarn in any centre stitch. *Ch 3, work 1 dc, 1 hdc into the same stitch, ch 3, sl st into the next centre stitch.* Repeat from * four more times to make five petals.

Step 3. Shape each petal gently with your fingers. If you prefer fuller petals, work 2 dc instead of 1 dc in each petal base.

Step 4. Fasten off and weave in ends on the back. For an appliqué, leave the centre flat. For a bouquet, sew a green stem or attach floral wire behind the flower.

Finishing

Block lightly by pinning the petals into a smooth curve and misting with water. Allow the flower to dry completely before attaching it to another project.

Helpful tip

Use a slightly smaller hook for the yellow centre and a relaxed chain tension for the petals so the flower lies flat.
