A granny square cushion is a satisfying way to use leftover yarn and practise colour changes. The front is made from four matching squares, while the back uses two overlapping rectangles for an easy removable cover. Instructions fit a 40 cm cushion insert when blocked to size.
Materials
- Worsted or aran-weight yarn in 3–4 colours
- 5 mm hook
- 40 cm cushion insert
- yarn needle and stitch markers.

ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; dc = double crochet; sp = space; st = stitch.
Pattern instructions
Step 1. Make 4 squares. With colour A, ch 4 and join to form a ring. Round 1: ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2; repeat [3 dc, ch 2] three times. Join with sl st.
Step 2. Round 2: sl st to a corner space. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same corner. In each following corner work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc]. Work 1 ch between corner groups along each side. Join.
Step 3. Continue rounds, placing [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in every corner and 3 dc in each side space. Change colours at the join. Stop when each square measures about 20 cm.
Step 4. Join the four squares into a 2-by-2 panel using slip stitch or mattress stitch. For the back, crochet two rectangles the same width as the panel; make each about two-thirds of the panel height so they overlap.
Step 5. Place the back panels behind the front with right sides facing out. Join around all four edges with single crochet, inserting the cushion before closing the final side.
Finishing
Weave in ends and check the cushion insert slides through the envelope opening. Add buttons to the overlap if you want a more decorative closure.
Helpful tip
Block each square before joining. Matching square measurements make the finished cover much neater.
