This pocket teddy is designed as a small keepsake that fits in the palm of your hand. The head and body are worked in one continuous piece to reduce sewing, while the ears and arms are added separately. The finished bear measures approximately 10–12 cm when made with the suggested yarn and hook.
Materials
- DK cotton or acrylic yarn in a main colour (about 25 g)
- a small amount of cream yarn for the muzzle
- 2.5 mm hook
- toy stuffing
- stitch marker
- yarn needle and scissors. For a child-safe toy
- embroider the eyes instead of using safety eyes.
Abbreviations
MR = magic ring; sc = single crochet; inc = 2 sc in one stitch; dec = invisible decrease; sl st = slip stitch; st(s) = stitch(es). Work in continuous rounds unless stated.
Pattern instructions
Step 1. Head and body: R1 6 sc in MR (6). R2 inc around (12). R3 [sc, inc] around (18). R4 [2 sc, inc] around (24). R5–8 sc around (24).
Step 2. Shape the head: R9 [2 sc, dec] around (18). R10 [sc, dec] around (12). Add a little stuffing. R11 [sc, inc] around (18). R12–15 sc around (18).
Step 3. Shape the body: R16 [sc, dec] around (12). Stuff firmly but keep the neck flexible. R17 dec around (6). Fasten off and close the opening.
Step 4. Ears (make 2): 6 sc in MR, sl st to first stitch, leaving a long tail. Flatten each circle and sew to the upper sides of the head.
Step 5. Arms (make 2): 6 sc in MR, work 4 rounds of 6 sc. Lightly stuff the tips, flatten and sew to the upper body. Embroider a small oval muzzle and a nose.
Finishing
Pin all pieces before sewing so the bear sits evenly. Use the yarn needle to weave in every end securely. Add a tiny scarf or a stitched heart for a personal finish.
Helpful tip
Keep your tension firm so stuffing does not show. If the fabric feels stiff, move up to a 2.75 mm hook rather than pulling the yarn tighter.
