Granny square crochet texture for beginner tutorial

This washcloth uses alternating single crochet and double crochet rows to create a gentle texture. Cotton yarn is absorbent and durable, making the square useful in the kitchen or bathroom.

Materials

50 g cotton DK yarn, 4 mm hook, yarn needle and scissors.

Abbreviations

ch = chain; sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; st = stitch.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1. Foundation: Ch 31. Row 1: sc in second chain from hook and in each chain across (30). Ch 1, turn.

Step 2. Row 2: sc in first stitch, *dc in next stitch, sc in next stitch*. Repeat across, ending with sc. Ch 1, turn.

Step 3. Row 3: sc in every stitch across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the square measures approximately 20 cm.

Step 4. Border: Work one round of sc evenly around the square, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st and fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends and wash the cloth before first use according to the yarn label. Make a matching set in different colours.

Helpful tip

Count your stitches at the end of each row. A consistent stitch count keeps the edges straight and makes the border easier.
