Handmade crochet yarn texture for home decor

This compact basket is made with a firm base and simple rounds that build straight sides. Use it for yarn scraps, craft tools or small household items. The final size changes with yarn thickness and tension; the sample is about 18 cm wide.

Materials

  • Super bulky cotton cord or t-shirt yarn (approximately 150 m)
  • 8 mm hook
  • stitch marker
  • yarn needle and scissors.

Abbreviations

MR = magic ring; sc = single crochet; inc = 2 sc in one stitch; sl st = slip stitch; BLO = back loop only.

Pattern instructions

Step 1. Base R1: 8 sc in MR (8). R2: inc around (16). R3: [sc, inc] around (24). R4: [2 sc, inc] around (32). R5: [3 sc, inc] around (40).

Step 2. Continue increasing evenly by 8 stitches per round until the base reaches your desired diameter. Keep the circle flat; if it cups, add increases more often, and if it ripples, reduce them.

Step 3. Sides: Work one round of sc in BLO without increasing. This creates the turn from the base to the wall. Work 8–10 rounds of sc in both loops, keeping each stitch relaxed and even.

Step 4. Optional handles: In the final round, mark two opposite points. At each point ch 5, skip 5 stitches and continue sc around. In the next round, work 5 sc into each chain space.

Finishing

Fasten off and weave the tail through several stitches on the inside. Shape the basket by hand and fill it temporarily with folded towels or yarn to help the sides settle.

Helpful tip

The basket needs a firm fabric. If it slouches, use a smaller hook or a thicker cord rather than adding excessive tension.
