Pink and white handmade crochet tote bag

This everyday tote is designed for light shopping, library trips and carrying a small project. The base is crocheted as an oval, then the sides are worked in rounds. Cotton yarn helps the bag keep its shape and makes it easy to wash.

Materials

  • 200–250 g sturdy cotton yarn
  • 4 mm hook
  • stitch marker
  • yarn needle and scissors. Optional: fabric lining.

Abbreviations

ch = chain; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; inc = 2 stitches in one stitch.

Pattern instructions

Step 1. Base: Ch 31. Work 1 sc in the second chain from hook and in the next 28 chains; work 3 sc in the last chain. Continue along the underside of the chain with 1 sc in each of the next 28 loops, then 2 sc in the final loop. (62 sts).

Step 2. Round 2: Work 1 sc in each stitch, placing 2 sc in each of the 3 stitches at both rounded ends. Use a marker at the beginning of the round. Continue increasing at the ends until the oval is about 28 cm long.

Step 3. Sides: Work 1 round of sc in the back loop only to create a crisp base edge. Then work hdc in each stitch around for 22–25 cm, or until the bag is your preferred height.

Step 4. Handle placement: Flatten the bag and mark two handle gaps on each side, leaving about 12 cm between the handle sections. Ch 35 for the first handle span, skip the marked stitches and continue around; repeat for the second handle.

Step 5. Work 2 rounds of sc around the top edge and into each chain handle. Fasten off. For stronger handles, work one extra round of slip stitches around each handle opening.

Finishing

Weave in ends firmly. If the bag will carry heavier items, add a cotton fabric lining and reinforce the handle joins with a few extra stitches.

Helpful tip

A tight single-crochet base reduces stretching. Avoid very soft, loosely spun yarn for a bag that needs to carry weight.
