This blanket uses a beginner-friendly row repeat that creates a soft, flexible fabric without complicated shaping. Pastel stripes give it a calm, timeless look, but you can choose any palette. The instructions make a small pram blanket; add starting chains for a wider size.
Materials
- Approximately 500–650 g baby-friendly DK yarn in 3 colours
- 4 mm hook
- yarn needle and scissors. Choose machine-washable yarn and follow its care label.
Abbreviations
ch = chain; sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; st = stitch; sk = skip.
Pattern instructions
Step 1. Foundation: Ch 101 for a small blanket. Row 1: sc in second chain from hook and in every chain across (100 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Step 2. Row 2: sc in first stitch. *Sk next stitch, work 2 dc in next stitch, sk next stitch, sc in next stitch.* Repeat across, ending with sc in the final stitch. Ch 1, turn.
Step 3. Row 3: sc in each stitch across, working 1 sc into each dc and each sc from the previous row. This creates a stable base for the next textured row. Ch 1, turn.
Step 4. Repeat Rows 2–3 until the blanket measures about 65 cm. Change colour every 8 rows, carrying the unused yarn loosely up the side or fastening off at each stripe.
Step 5. Border: Work one round of sc evenly around all four sides, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st and fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in every colour change securely. Block lightly to square the corners. For baby items, avoid loose decorative buttons, beads and long cords.
Helpful tip
Make a small swatch first and wash it as you plan to wash the blanket. This helps you estimate the finished size after laundering.
