Hand holding a handmade crochet flower bouquet

This little heart is worked in one small round with a shaped top and pointed base. It is a useful stash-buster and can be sewn onto many projects. The finished heart is around 4 cm wide in DK yarn.

Materials

  • A small amount of DK yarn
  • 3 mm hook
  • yarn needle and scissors. Optional: a brooch back or hair clip.

Abbreviations

MR = magic ring; ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet.

Pattern instructions

Step 1. Make a magic ring but do not close it tightly yet. Ch 2. Into the ring work 3 tr, 3 dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr, ch 2, then sl st into the ring.

Step 2. Pull the magic ring closed to form the heart centre. The first group of stitches forms one rounded lobe, the treble in the centre creates the point at the bottom, and the second group forms the other lobe.

Step 3. Fasten off with a 15 cm tail. Use the tail to secure the centre and weave it neatly to the back. Shape the two top curves with your fingers.

Finishing

Sew the heart to a project with small whip stitches around the edge. For a hanging decoration, attach a short loop of chain at the centre dip.

Helpful tip

If the heart curls, try a larger hook. If the centre hole remains open, pull the magic ring tighter and secure the tail through several stitches.
